Funders Aren’t Looking for Grant-writing Wizards

Grant funders are not expecting perfection.

They’re not looking for the most polished, most “professional” application in the stack.

They’re looking to connect with the person on the other side of the screen.

What they actually want to know is:

• Why does your work matter?

• Who does your work impact?

• Are you going to be a good steward of this money?

• With funding, can you deliver on what you say you’ll deliver?

That’s a much lower bar than “be the best writer in the pile.”

Once I figured this out, a lot of the pressure I put on myself melted away.

So if you’re chasing an idea of “perfect,” let it go.

Aim for “I did my best,” then move on.

Grants Ask the Same Questions

Once you start applying regularly, you’ll notice something: grant applications tend to ask the same handful of questions over and over. That repetition is a gift.

I teach how to answer these questions in the Hit Submit Challenge. Plus, you’ll get real-time feedback to improve your responses.

That means every time you answer one of these questions, you’re not starting from scratch; you’re adding to a growing library of answers you can pull from and refine.

Over the course of a year, if you’re applying for even one grant a month, you’ll end up with a dozen different versions of the same answer. And when one of those versions actually wins something, you’ll know exactly which angle landed (and you can lean into it again).

This is exactly why applying more often matters.

The creators who submit once a year never get to build that archive or do that A/B testing. The ones who submit consistently get better with every round, because they’re not reinventing the wheel each time.

You Don’t Have to Do it All in One Sitting

No rule says you have to complete a grant application in one three-hour sitting, or that you have to answer question one before question two.

Work on whatever part of the application excites you or comes easily first.

If the community-impact question lights you up, start there. If you’re a quick-wins person, knock out the easy sections first to build momentum.

I discovered my current process: writing applications bit by bit, in 20- or 30-minute sessions spread across a few days out of necessity.

I don’t have four uninterrupted hours to sit and write anymore, and honestly, coming back with fresh eyes each session has made my applications better.

I catch typos and long-winded sentences I would have missed staring at a screen for a long time.

Note: Watch for the actual deadline and any submission caps. Some applications close early once they hit a certain number of applicants, regardless of the posted deadline — so don’t wait until the last minute if a grant mentions a cap.

Time To Hit Submit!

Hitting submit gets easier when you stop chasing perfection, start building a reusable library of answers, and give yourself permission to work in whatever order and pace actually fits your life.

Pursuing grants doesn’t require you to become someone you’re not.

As creators, persuading, storytelling, and communication are already what we do every day; grant applications ask us to use those same skills in a slightly different way.

I hear this all the time:

“I found a grant I want to apply for…but now what?”

If that’s you, I see you.

Finding a grant is the first step. The harder part is actually sitting down, figuring out what to say, and getting the application submitted.

And unfortunately, most of us weren’t taught how to pursue grants.

Most of us learn through trial and error, which means spending way too much time wondering:

Am I answering this question correctly?

1. The Audacious Voyage Grant - For Women Creatives

This grant funds projects that bring together three things: a real journey, a real environmental thread, and a real creative outcome. The voyage can be anything: an ocean crossing, a wilderness expedition, a human-powered journey, or an environmental observation project. What matters is that it takes you somewhere physically and demands something of you. The environmental component doesn’t require scientific credentials or formal research. It asks that you go somewhere, pay attention to what’s happening to the natural world around you, and bring that truth back. The creative work, whether a film, photo essay, written narrative, audio piece, or exhibition, is how that truth reaches an audience. The format is yours.

Applicants must identify as women and be undertaking a qualifying first-time transformative project. This doesn't mean you've never done anything - it means this project represents a meaningful first: leading an expedition, producing a major creative work, undertaking an adventure of new scale, or connecting exploration with environmental advocacy for the first time. $10,000 will be awarded.

2. [NEW] The VMFA Aaron Siskind Award - For Contemporary Photography

This award is intended to support early- to mid-career artists as well as established photographers who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to their practice but may not yet have received significant critical recognition. Two artists will each receive an unrestricted prize of $25,000. This material support is meant to enable photographers to complete a meaningful body of work—whether the continuation or finalization of a photographic series; the development of an exhibition, monograph, or book project; or another major creative endeavor.

3. The Prism Foundation Community Grants - For Nonprofits

This opportunity provides funding for projects that make a strong, positive impact on the API and LGBTQIA+ communities. Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000 and provide core funding to under-resourced and/or underrepresented local community organizations and projects.

4. Princeton Arts Fellowship

This opportunity is awarded to artists whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise in any area of artistic practice and teaching. Applicants for this cycle should be early-career dancers, theater and music theater performers, and musicians who would benefit from spending two years teaching and working in an artistically vibrant university community. A $93,000-per-year stipend is provided. Fellowships are not intended to fund work leading to an advanced degree.

5. The Dedalus Foundation’s Senior Fellowship Program - For Writers & Scholars

Under this program, fellowships are awarded to writers and scholars who have demonstrated their abilities through prior accomplishments and are not currently enrolled in academic programs. It is intended to encourage and support critical and historical studies related to painting, sculpture, and allied arts from the twentieth century. Fellowship stipends vary according to the needs of the specific project, with a maximum of $30,000.

Reviewers have a stack of applications and no time to spare

The rumors are true: reviewers really do skim. They have a lot of grant applications to review, so get to the point. Directly answer the question asked.

Every sentence should give reviewers a reason to keep going. If it doesn’t add a new piece of information or move your case forward, it’s a distraction.

I rooted for the creators who needed it most

As a reviewer, I wanted to advocate for the people this funding gap could really support. The applicants who clearly stated their need and exactly what the funding would allow them to do rose to the top.

And I noticed the opposite, too: some applicants read as too advanced for the opportunity, others as not quite ready yet. Knowing what you need helps you make that case convincingly.

Before working on your next grant application, get clear on what investments you would need to take your project or business to the next level. This is not something to figure out on the fly when an opportunity shows up. Know this well in advance.

As soon as I hit submit, I’d start picturing what I’d do if I got the grant.

Then the rejection email came.

“We regret to inform you...”

Was my project not good enough? Am I failing as a founder, creator, or solopreneur?

Over time, I realized I was letting one application decide my whole future.

That realization completely changed how I approach grants.

Grants are a Numbers Game

A lot of creators only apply for one grant, maybe two at most.

When they don’t win, they end up saying, “Grants don’t work.”

But imagine if you pitched one podcast guest appearance a year? Or published one blog post, or sent one sales email about your offer?

You wouldn’t judge your success on just one try. Right?

So why do we do that with grant funding?

The truth is, grant funding is all about the numbers.

Every grant draws in applications from talented, passionate people doing important work. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. That’s just how it goes.

Detach Your Identity From the Outcome

Getting rejected doesn’t say anything about your self-worth.

It doesn’t mean your idea isn’t good.

The more I stopped tying my identity to the outcome, the easier it has gotten to keep moving forward.

Now, when I get a rejection, I update my spreadsheet and move on.

Why? Because I always have other opportunities lined up.

There’s another deadline ahead.

My One-Grant-Per-Month Rule

Two years ago, I decided to stop sitting on the sidelines and take grants seriously.

I set a goal to apply for one grant every month.

That’s it. Not ten, not twenty—just one.

By sticking to this rule, I always have something in the works.

A rejection doesn’t feel so bad anymore because there’s always another chance coming up. The goal is to become the kind of creator who keeps putting themselves out there.

Every application helps you:

• Clarify your mission

• Refine your impact

• Better communicate your work, who it helps, and why it matters

• Strengthen your storytelling

Keep Playing the Game

If you’re feeling down after a rejection, remember this: You won’t win every time.

Chances are, you only need to win one or two a year to fund your next chapter.

The creators who win grant funding are usually the most persistent.

They’re the ones who keep applying. Again. And again.

Until the right funder says YES.
